On a distant island, where the sun shone and the sky stayed a deep blue, lived a girl called Antonia. She had a special gift: she could understand birdsong. Her island was full of brightly coloured birds whose melodies filled the air.
One day, Antonia noticed that the birds were losing their colours. Their shining feathers were turning grey, and their once cheerful songs sounded sad and faint. Worried about her feathered friends, she decided to find out what was wrong.
With a notebook and a little pair of binoculars, she explored the island. She watched, listened and, most of all, used her gift to talk to the birds. Soon she discovered the reason: they felt that the islanders no longer appreciated their beauty or listened to their songs.
Antonia returned to the village determined to change things. She taught the other children what she had learnt: the birds’ names, their different songs and the way each species enriched the island. Together they created a large garden of flowers and trees where the birds could find shelter and sing.
As the children tended the garden and listened to the birds, bright colours began returning to their feathers. Happy songs rang out across the island again, more beautiful than ever.
Antonia and her friends learnt that listening to nature and caring for it could make a real difference. The birds shone with all their colours once more, and the island became an even more magical place.
