In the Puigverd forest, where the trees whisper secrets at dusk, lived Llobet, a gray wolf with ears bigger than his brothers’. Everyone knew that wolves are brave, that they hunt at night, and that they don’t tremble even in the heaviest rain. But Llobet had a secret: he was afraid of the dark.
Every night, when the sun hid behind the mountains, his heart began to beat like a drum. The shadows of the trees seemed like monsters to him, and the hooting of an owl made him jump like a toad. His friends would say to him:
“Are you a wolf or a bunny?”—and they would burst out laughing.
Llobet would get angry, but he didn’t know what to do. Until one night, while hiding in a hollow to avoid going out, he heard a soft cry. It was the White Hare, who was also hiding.
“What’s wrong?” asked Llobet, forgetting his fear for a moment.
“I always get lost in the woods at night… and I’m afraid I’ll never find my way home again,” whispered the Hare, her eyes like two tears.
Llobet remained still. He was afraid too… but at least he had never gotten lost! Then he had an idea:
“If you tell me which way to go so I don’t see strange shadows… I’ll guide you through the woods with my wolf’s sense of smell!”
And so they did. The Hare showed him wide, rootless paths where he didn’t think there were any monsters, and Llobet sniffed the way home. They discovered that together, the darkness was less frightening.
Until one night, after seven nights of helping each other, they reached a moonlit clearing. The Hare said:
“Look, Llobet… the shadows that frighten you are just trees! And the noise you hear is the wind playing with the leaves.”
Llobet looked more closely. She was right. The branches that looked like arms were just dancing trees, and the whistling was the birds waking up. That night, for the first time, he lifted his snout and howled at the moon… without fear.
And from then on, although he was sometimes a little afraid, he remembered that everyone is afraid of something… even the biggest wolves.
