The Empty School

Once upon a time, there was a seven-year-old girl named Carme. She was cheerful, curious, and loved going to school, a special place called Catalonia, where fun things always happened.

One morning, Carme woke up early, dressed quickly, and, with her backpack on, got into the car with her mother. She was excited because she wanted to see her friends and her teacher.

When they arrived at the school, everything seemed a little strange. There were no children in the playground, no noise, no laughter. Everything was silent.

“How strange…” said Carme.

But since her mother was in a hurry, she dropped her off at the door and left for work.

Carme, somewhat intrigued, went into the school alone.

“Hello? Is anyone there?” she called out.

Only the echo of her voice could be heard in the empty hallways.

She started walking slowly. She looked inside her classroom… but it was completely empty. She went to the playground… there was no one there either. She even went past the library, but there wasn’t a single child reading.

With every step, Carme felt more confused.

“Maybe they’ve hidden themselves to surprise me?” she thought.

She decided to search more thoroughly, opening doors and looking everywhere, but she couldn’t find anyone. Catalonia School seemed deserted!

Just when she was starting to get really worried, she heard a noise at the front door.

“Carme!” a familiar voice called.

It was her mother, who had come running back.

“Carme, come quick!” she said, a little nervous but smiling.

Carme ran to her.

“Mom! There’s no one here! Where is everyone?”

Her mother laughed softly.

“Oh, Carme… we’ve made a mistake. Today is Saturday!”

Carme stood still for a second… and then she burst out laughing.

“Ah! That explains why it was so empty!”

They both left the school hand in hand, still laughing.

“Well, since we’re both awake,” said Mom, “how about we go have hot chocolate and churros for breakfast?”

Carme’s eyes lit up.

“Yes!”

And so, what had begun as a mysterious morning turned into a fun adventure that Carme would never forget.
