Once upon a time there was a brave, curious girl called Bet. One day, while walking through her village with her family, she saw a poster announcing a special night at the museum: children could sleep among the exhibitions! Excited by the adventure, she persuaded her parents to let her join in.
That evening Bet arrived with her sleeping bag and a little torch. The museum director welcomed her and the other children, explaining that the building was full of magic and history. After a light supper, the main lights went out and only their torches lit the galleries.
Just as Bet was beginning to fall asleep, she heard a strange noise. She took her torch and followed the sound to the Egyptian gallery. There, to her astonishment, a statue of a pharaoh seemed to move. Bet went closer without fear and discovered that it was not the statue moving: a secret door behind it had opened slightly.
Curiosity drew her through the doorway. She found a narrow passage full of dust and cobwebs leading to a small chamber. An ancient scroll lay on a table. In the torchlight, she saw that it was a map of the museum, with a cross marked in the medieval art gallery.
Bet returned to their sleeping area and woke her new friend Marta. Together they followed the map through the dark galleries. Each room seemed to have its own sounds and movements. Suits of armour appeared to breathe, and paintings whispered stories of long ago.
At last they reached the medieval gallery. Behind a knight’s suit of armour they found an old box containing a diary and a key. The diary belonged to a former curator. It explained how many of the exhibits had been saved from destruction, and how the museum had become a shelter for history and culture.
Bet and Marta decided to share their discovery with the other children and the museum staff. The director was so impressed that he proposed a new exhibition about the museum’s secrets, with the girls as honorary guides.
That night Bet learnt that history could be both real and magical, and that every object had a story to tell. She also discovered that curiosity and courage can uncover incredible secrets, and that sharing those discoveries makes their magic even more special.
