Once upon a time, in an old mill, three brothers inherited everything their father owned. The eldest received the mill, the middle brother received the donkey, and the youngest, whose name was Peter, was left with only the family cat. Peter was very sad because he could not imagine how a cat could help him earn a living. What he did not know was that this was no ordinary cat: he was remarkably clever and owned a pair of magical boots.

Seeing his master’s sadness, the cat said:

“Do not worry, Peter. Just give me a sack and a pair of boots so that I can walk through the countryside, and you will see how our luck changes.”

Peter was surprised but hopeful, so he did as the cat asked.

Once he had put on his boots, the cat set off across the fields. Using his cleverness, he caught several rabbits and presented them to the king as a gift from his master, the Marquis of Carabas—a grand name the cat had invented to impress the king.

The king was so pleased with the gifts that he wished to meet the Marquis of Carabas. The cat then devised an even more cunning plan to make Peter appear to be a wealthy and powerful nobleman.

For some time, the cat continued to bring gifts to the king in the marquis’s name. One day, he learned that the king and his daughter, the princess, would be travelling beside the river. He told Peter to bathe there and hid his clothes.

When the royal carriage passed, the cat cried out for help. He claimed that thieves had stolen the Marquis of Carabas’s clothes while he was bathing. Remembering all the gifts he had received, the king ordered his servants to bring Peter fine clothes and invited him into the carriage.

The princess looked at Peter with curiosity and admiration. Dressed in such splendid clothes, he looked like a true marquis. Peter thanked the king and climbed into the carriage. He was still a little shy, but delighted to sit beside the princess.

Meanwhile, the cat ran ahead and persuaded the farmers to tell the king that all the surrounding land belonged to the Marquis of Carabas. When the king saw the vast fields and heard the farmers’ words, he was impressed by the marquis’s supposed wealth.

At last, the cat reached the ogre’s castle. The ogre was the true owner of the land. With great cunning, the cat challenged him to turn himself into a mouse. The moment the ogre did so, the cat caught him. When the king arrived at the castle, the cat welcomed him and announced that it was the home of his master, the Marquis of Carabas.

The king was so impressed that he offered Peter the princess’s hand in marriage. Peter had fallen in love with her and gladly accepted. Puss in Boots smiled when he saw his master so happy and knew that his mission was complete.

Peter and the princess married and lived happily ever after. They were always grateful to the cat, who became a hero throughout the kingdom and continued to live with them in the castle, proud that his cleverness had changed their fortune.
